Bay Area Mussar is a website dedicated to creating
and supporting Mussar practice throughout the
San Francisco Bay Area.
Welcome to the community’s new and developing site. We’ve recently had a major facelift and more updates are expected on an ongoing basis.
Here, you can learn and connect with others practicing this Jewish ethical and
spiritual approach to daily living.
In November 2014, a diverse group of Mussar practitioners from the SF Bay Area met at The Mussar Institute’s annual Kallah (retreat) in Zion Illinois. We expressed a general desire to build a mussar community in the Bay Area. From that meeting, Greg Marcus was inspired to create the Bayareamussar.org website, which was little more than a vision and a means to gather email addresses to notify people about upcoming Mussar events.
In January 2015, we met again for a few hours with Alan Morinis at a Peet’s Coffee in Emeryville, CA to talk about where our numbers grew. From that meeting, Greg Marcus , Sarah Rose , Sharon Schwartz, Marilyn Paul and Joanie Zecherle came together to form Bay Area Mussar. In just a few months, we planned an amazing event An Afternoon of Mussar that was attended by 68 people, many of whom new to Mussar. It was extraordinary how people who were virtual strangers could come together with a shared mission to spread Mussar, to both expand our practice communities and to bring Mussar to a wider Jewish community. Every meeting we had was conducted according to Mussar principles:
- Mindfulness, beginning with a short meditation to bring our selves to focus
- Order, in that we had an agenda and clear roles and responsibilities
- Truth, Kindness, and Honor in that we could share ideas, give honest feedback in a kindly way
- Honor, respecting that each person had something unique to contribute
- Trust – feeling the calm confidence that we were aligned with a Divine mission
Very special thanks go to Linda Lee from AskMePc-WebDesign for doing an amazing job designing this website. We love you Linda!
We don’t exactly know how what will happen in the future, but of course we never do. We retain a vision for a large Mussar community in the SF Bay Area, and we’d love your help.
